Biodegradable food packaging, can help us improve the situation with regard to waste scattered in the environment, some clearly visible to the naked eye, others less but still harmful. Researches advance and propose us innovative solutions for biodegradable food packaging, it is also up to us to dare, change habits, invest in the future by changing present habits.

Biodegradable food packaging

It is one of the most important actions we can do today to use biodegradable food packaging Why most of the waste that we produce every day comes from food packaging and the packaging of what we eat or drink.

There are some products that we can buy in bulk and this is certainly a contribution to the environment, but not all of this can be distributed in this way. There are though some products that cannot do without packaging, therefore we need biodegradable food packaging.

A lot of work is being done in this sector, at the same time, in various parts of the world, and they are emerging biodegradable and compostable sheets for the conservation of forage, biodegradable and compostable packaging for the conservation of small fruits and biodegradable and compostable materials with highly innovative gas barriers.

Then there are some futuristic biodegradable food packaging that maybe soon we will also be able to use, such as those proposed by Tomorrow Machine. It is about containers for liquids, gelatinous, made with water and agar agar, triangular containers for dry foods made with beeswax, and rounded containers created with caramelized sugar coated with natural wax, for olive oil and similar liquids.

Biodegradable packaging: bags

Using biodegradable bags is just as important as choosing products they have biodegradable food packaging. Today they are bought at the checkout counters of supermarkets but are often hated because they are considered fragile and not very resistant, and moreover we must also pay for them. If in some cases it is true that we are in the hands of the inconsistent and unreliable-looking bags, it should be noted that this is not always the case.

It depends on the thickness ranging from 12 to 25 micrometers, for example, but also from the type of polymer: those derived from corn starch, wheat flour and potato starch have different characteristics. The legislation says that from 1 January 2018, all compostable shoppers must contain at least 40% of materials from renewable sources, in 2010 it will rise to 50%, in 2021 to 60%.

Compostable biodegradable packaging

To understand if we are using compostable biodegradable food packaging let's see what it means to be compostable. There is a standard (UNI EN 13432) that indicates the necessary characteristics. These packaging must be of biodegradable material, that is, it must biodegrade to 90% in less than 6 months, it must also be "disintegrating", that is, it fragments and loses visibility.

Furthermore, heavy metals can only be present below the predefined maximum values and no negative effects on the composting process or ecotoxicological effects on plant growth must be recorded. When the compostable biodegradable food packaging degrades, the chemical-physical parameters such as pH, N, P, Mg, K, salt content, volatile solids must remain unchanged.

Biodegradable packaging Genoa

In Liguria, near Savona, more than in Genoa, we find one of the Italian companies engaged in the creation of biodegradable food packaging. Flexopack, founded in the 1980s but with a tradition in the sector that dates back to the 1960s. Today there are also numerous startups and SMEs that look to this sector and bring you a great charge of innovation and technology that bodes well. We will have no more excuses for not using biodegradable food packaging.
