Oleander, pruning: how to prune oleander, best time for pruning and all the information on oleander cultivation.

Thereoleander pruningit is necessary to give the plant a sapling shape or to trigger more abundant blooms or, for containment purposes.

When to prune the oleander:the right time for pruning

To give theoleandera sapling shape or simply a more contained and harmonious shape, you can perform thepruningin two moments: in late winter or late autumn.

When and how is theoleander pruning?

In late winter

There pruning at the end of winter it is used to eliminate dry branches, weak or diseased branches. You can also delete very old branches in case ofoleanderscultivated for some time. The branches, in all cases, must be cut at the base to encourage the emission of new shoots and make room for those that will bear flowers during the following summer.

In autumn

There pruning oleander autumn is done after flowering. It is a containing pruning: all the branches are shortened. There pruning aims to shorten all the branches that have bloomed by a third. The autumn pruning, performed in this way, aims to contain the plant and stimulate the emission of new branches from the base, preventing the bush from emptying.

In northern Italy, the ideal period for oleander pruning changes. There pruning at the end of winter it remains unchanged but the autumn weather trend must be considered before taking action. In northern Italy, if the frost comes early it could damage the fresh cuts; to solve the problem, the application of an ad hoc healing product or a homemade mastic, just like the one used to protect the grafts, might be useful.

If the weather is particularly unusual (autumn frosts, late blooms ...) it may be advisable to postpone pruning to mid-late February so as to prevent the cold from causing irreparable damage to fresh cuts. Fall pruning is especially useful for keeping the bush in order.

Intensive pruning of the oleander

If the bush is very dense or in case ofoleandersparticularly old or suffering, it will be necessary to perform apruningmore intensive in the late winter period.

This pruning is performed by cutting all the branches up to 15-20 cm from the ground, it serves to regenerate the entire crown of the plant. In some circumstances it could also be useful in case of diseased oleander, however, if you have a diseased oleander, it would be better to treat with ad hoc plant protection products.

The oleander tolerates even very intensive interventions well, the only precaution required is a disinfectant treatment to be performed following pruning. The most effective treatment is based on copper salts to prevent mange infections (Psudomonas savastonoi pv. Nerii). Among the recommended copper-based products we point out copper oxychloride-20, allowed in organic farming at the doses indicated on the label.

Oleander, sapling pruning

The sapling breeding must be carried out from the first years of the plant's life. If the plant already has a bushy growth it is really difficult to trigger a sapling shape.

To trigger the sapling shape, in the first years of the plant's life, a stronger central branch must be chosen to make it thicken. L'oleanderit is a bushy plant but it is possible to grow it as a sapling by making it grow with the main central branch more robust, so as to resemble a tree.

If theoleanderit is grown injar, it is recommended to use very tall and deep containers. For more information on oleander cultivation, the best varieties to grow in your garden (colors, blooms, needs ...) and pruning, we invite you to read our guides:
